IUD

An IUD insertion typically takes two appointments, and 1-2 weeks to complete depending on appointment availability. There is also a third appointment 6 weeks after insertion.

Appointment 1: discuss the risks of the procedure, what to expect, check for health reasons it may not be safe to do the procedure, go through consent form. This is usually a long appointment as it takes time to go through the paperwork and arrange some tests before insertion, usually including a blood test and a urine test, and sometimes a pelvic ultrasound if required.

Appointment 2: The insertion appointment. The out of pocket cost of this procedure appointment is $155 ($295 with approx $140 back from Medicare) plus the prescription cost. The Mirena costs $30-$40 and a copper IUD costs around $100 depending on the brand and the pharmacy you purchase from. The whole time for setting up and completing the procedure may take an hour, so it is advisable to plan to be in the clinic for an hour or more.

Appointment 3: 6 weeks after insertion.
This is to check the IUD is in the correct position. This appointment will be Bulk Billed.

The total cost including the three appointments needed will be an out of pocket cost of $295 ($445 with approx. $260 back from Medicare). (note: cost with a specialist will be a round $1000, and under anaesthetic will be $2000-$3000). The cost of the Mirena or copper iud device will be paid separately when you purchase it from the pharmacy.
